The arrangement of the sofa is crucial in defining the spaces of the living room and living area. The possibilities are not lacking and positioning a sofa, or more sofas, in the right way requires a reasoning based on the type of furniture for the living room or the open space living area.

How to arrange a corner sofa

If you have chosen a corner sofa or with a chaise longue, there are mainly three possible cases: you can place the sofa against the wall on both sides, leave one side uncovered or place it in the middle of the room, so as to naturally separate the areas of one. same environment.

The corner sofa can be placed on the wall on both sides, leave one side uncovered or place it in the middle of the room (to divide two rooms into an open space).

If we do not have large sizes available, the advice is to lean both sides against the wall: in this way the sofa will frame the room, leaving a large central space. In the case of a small living room with an open kitchen, whoever is on the sofa will be able to communicate openly with whoever is at the stove.

If, on the other hand, we need to organize a large open space, the corner sofa is the ideal divider for the area where the television or projector is stored. In this case, we can place it in the center of the room or with only one side leaning against the wall. Using the sofa as a divider will allow you to experience environments in a more versatile way: inside an open space it will be possible to furnish an area dedicated to conviviality and a relaxation area that interact without being intrusive in any way.

If you still don’t know where to put your corner sofa, start from the sources of heat and light: think about your living area starting from doors, windows and any radiators. The sofa can be placed under a window, but it is rarely recommended to place it near a radiator.

How to place a linear sofa

Arranging a linear sofa within a room seems much simpler than a corner sofa. However, we will have to start from some fixed points: for example, the sofa must be in front of the TV (if your living room includes one).

The linear sofa can be placed in the center of a room, if small, or on the wall.

It should also be remembered that the minimum distance between the sofa and the TV depends on the size of the screen: it must be at least 1.6 times its diagonal.

Sofa in the center of the room

The sofa in the center of the room is a possible solution only if the dimensions of the room are not too small. If it is a small living room, there is the risk of making the passage seem narrow and not having the minimum distance guaranteed by the television.

If the room has dimensions that allow it, the sofa in the center is a very refined and elegant solution. Behind the sofa, you can arrange a dining table or a bookcase. In an open space, it can be used to divide the kitchen from the living room. The upholstery should also be taken into account: a sofa that is not completely upholstered, in the back for example, is perfect for leaning against the wall and not in the center of the room.

Sofa under the window

The sofa under the window is a solution that allows you to greatly optimize the spaces, sprinkling with light a point where we often find ourselves reading or carrying out our hobbies.

The only precaution to have concerns the sofas with reclining headrest, which do not particularly lend themselves to this arrangement.

If you don’t want to run into the risk of bumping into the corners of an open window, you can always consider a vasistas opening for a gentler air change.

Sofa against the wall

The linear sofa against the wall is perhaps the most classic arrangement of all.

We recommend a position in front of the television, so as not to strain the eyes. Inside an open space, the sofa can be placed on the wall opposite the kitchen, so as to create a single environment.

Two sofas: facing each other or at an angle?

When you want to place two sofas, the choices are essentially two: one facing the other or at an angle.

Sofas arranged at an angle
The arrangement of two L-shaped or corner sofas allows you to save space and create a sitting area that circumscribes the relaxation area.

The front arrangement is very chic: it recalls the atmosphere of the living rooms of the past, where the sofas were used to welcome and converse. Between the two sofas, there was usually a small table for magazines and drinks. The L or corner arrangement, on the other hand, obviously allows you to save space and better focus attention on a possible screen.

How to arrange the sofa and dining table

As for the arrangement of the sofa and dining table, it all depends on the relationship we want to create within the environment.

If our project is that of an open living area, where all the elements interact with each other, the advice is to arrange the sofa perpendicular to the table or in front of it. If, on the other hand, the intention is to separate the different areas as much as possible, we suggest placing the table behind the sofa.
